The Ancient City Wall of Xuyi

The Ancient City Wall of Xuyi is a protected cultural heritage site of Jiangsu Province.

The Ancient City Wall of Xuyi is located on the mountainside of the Huai River mountain range in Xuyi County, adjacent to the west bank of the Huai River. It was built along the ridges of Elephant Mountain, Qidashan Mountain, Tiantai Mountain, Shanggui Mountain, and the Huai River, utilizing the terrain's natural defenses to create a highly strategic and easily defensible position. Current surveys indicate that the wall ruins stretch approximately 13 kilometers in total length, with about 8 kilometers still preserved. There are no clear historical records regarding the exact time of the wall’s initial construction. According to literature research, it is speculated to have been built during the Song-Jin confrontation period as the Xuyi Mountain Fortress by Zhang Jun, later destroyed during the Jingnan Campaign in the early Ming Dynasty.
