Gubei New District

Gubei New District is located along Hongqiao Road in the western part of Shanghai’s urban area, adjacent to the Hongqiao Economic and Technological Development Zone. It primarily features high-standard residential complexes for expatriates, while also incorporating commercial and foreign trade functions. Situated close to the Hongqiao Economic and Technological Development Zone, the entire district is divided into three subdistricts and 24 blocks. The first subdistrict is a comprehensive area mainly composed of high-rise apartments, office towers, and exhibition halls; the second subdistrict is a residential zone; and the third subdistrict is a combination of consulate villas, commercial residences, and office towers. This is a predominantly residential area that also serves as a hub for foreign affairs and international trade activities. It is home to many foreigners working and residing in Shanghai, as well as compatriots from Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan, making it another open window to the outside world at Shanghai’s western gateway.

　The new district has now seen the completion of numerous apartment buildings and skyscrapers, many designed by renowned European architects. With their varied and elegant arched exteriors, noble and refined windows and curtain walls, and outdoor courtyards adorned with artistic sculptures, fountains, flower stands, lawns, wrought-iron railings, and garden lighting, they fully showcase a European style and exude a romantic ambiance. The development of Gubei New District reflects the future direction of Shanghai’s residential construction and stands as an excellent example of modern urban landscape. In May 1995, it was named one of the “Top Ten New Scenic Spots of Shanghai in the 1990s.”
