Shanghai Urban Sculpture Art Center

Through protective renovation and functional transformation, the Shanghai Urban Sculpture Art Center has turned an once-glorious but now defunct old factory into a public art sanctuary that embodies the city’s artistic vitality and spirit of the times, while also preserving the historical and cultural legacy of the city.

To promote the establishment of the Shanghai Urban Sculpture Art Center, under the leadership of the Municipal Party Committee and Municipal Government, the Shanghai Urban Sculpture Committee Office and the Shanghai Urban Planning and Administration Bureau planned and constructed an open, public, and international sculpture art platform. This initiative has created an urban sculpture art center in Shanghai that integrates exhibition and exchange, production incubation, sculpture storage, and art education — a world-class facility serving all four functions.

Drawing on international best practices of repurposing abandoned industrial buildings into public art centers within urban development, the site selection for the Shanghai Urban Sculpture Art Center is also grounded in actively promoting the preservation and reuse of Shanghai’s industrial heritage. After comparing multiple options, the final location was chosen to be the former Cold-Rolled Strip Mill within the idle premises of the former Shanghai No. 10 Steel Plant at 570 Huaihai West Road.

Built in 1956, the main structure of the factory is 180 meters long and 18–35 meters wide, covering a floor area of 6,280 square meters. With its tall architectural structure, spacious interior, and ruggedly robust form, the building provides an ideal space for the development of the Shanghai Urban Sculpture Art Center.

The Shanghai Urban Sculpture Art Center complex covers an area of approximately 50,000 square meters, consisting of the Urban Sculpture Art Center, a sculpture plaza, and related supporting facilities. The currently completed and open buildings have a total floor area of 10,000 square meters, including 6,000 square meters of indoor public art exhibition space. The sculpture plaza spans 15,000 square meters, which includes about 10,000 square meters of outdoor public display space. According to planning, the completion of the Shanghai Urban Sculpture Art Center will drive the gradual development of the area into the most vibrant public art hub in Shanghai’s city center.
