These houses were designed and planned by the Hungarian master architect László Hudec in the 1930s. Back then, the lane was home to many foreign expatriates. As time passed, the buildings were preserved, but the foreign residents gradually moved out. In recent years, many European and American professionals working in the Hongqiao Development Zone, drawn to the living experience of Xinhua Road, have started renting homes here in Xinhua Villas, and the area seems to be regaining some of its former charm.
