The Shanghai Textile and Apparel Museum is a science education base.

The Shanghai Textile and Apparel Museum (Donghua University Textile and Apparel Museum) is situated on the picturesque Yan’an Road Campus of Donghua University and was officially opened to the public in January 2009. It has been named a “Shanghai Science Popularization Tourism Demonstration Base,” “Shanghai Science Popularization Education Base,” “National Science Popularization Education Base,” “Shanghai Thematic Science Popularization Venue,” “Shanghai International Students’ Chinese Culture Experience Base,” and “Shanghai Citizens’ Lifelong Learning Practice Base — Apparel Culture Experience Base.”

The Shanghai Textile and Apparel Museum is divided into six sections: the Science Popularization Hall, Ancient Hall, Modern Hall, Ethnic Minority Hall, Audiovisual Space, and Mobile Exhibition Hall, covering a total exhibition area of over 4,600 square meters. The Science Popularization Hall uses high-tech displays and interactive exhibits to showcase the industrial chain and distinctive segments of the textile and apparel field; the Ancient Hall displays images and artifacts of textiles and apparel from various historical periods including the Pre-Qin, Qin-Han, Wei-Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties, Sui-Tang, Song-Yuan, and Ming-Qing dynasties; the Modern Hall exhibits artifacts of Chinese textiles and apparel from the late Qing Dynasty to the Republican era; the Ethnic Minority Hall showcases the rich and colorful costumes and textile techniques of China’s ethnic minorities; the Audiovisual Space is currently used mainly to screen the surround-screen film “Journey into the Mysteries of Textiles and Apparel.”

The Shanghai Textile and Apparel Museum focuses on the history of China’s textile and apparel development and science education in this field. It serves multiple functions including science popularization, academic exchange, disciplinary education, scientific research, and social services, creating an excellent environment for enhancing the public’s scientific literacy, humanistic spirit, and fashion awareness.
