Xiao Hong Memorial Monument and Tomb

The Xiao Hong Memorial Monument and Tomb are designated as a cultural heritage site protected at the provincial level in Heilongjiang Province.

The Xiao Hong Memorial Monument and Tomb are located 500 meters east within Xigang Park in Hulan District. Constructed in November 1992, they cover an area of 690 square meters. The monument and tomb face south and form a single scenic area made up of two main structures. The monument is located to the south, and the tomb to the north, about 5 meters apart. The area is enclosed by a steel-reinforced concrete fence adorned with a pattern resembling stacked books. The Xiao Hong Memorial Monument stands 2.4 meters tall, 3.4 meters wide, and 0.7 meters thick, and is carved from a large piece of bluestone sourced from northern China. On the front left side of the monument is inlaid the gilt bronze inscription “Xiao Hong Memorial Monument,” with smaller characters at the bottom reading: “Constructed on November 1, 1992, by Harbin Daily Newspaper, Hulan County People’s Government.” The calligraphy is bold and powerful running script, penned by the esteemed local calligrapher Mr. Wang Tian. On the front left side of the monument is also inlaid a bronze relief sculpture of Xiao Hong’s portrait, created by renowned sculptor Mr. Wang Songyin from our province. Below the portrait is a gilded bronze floral wreath relief. The base of the monument is elevated 0.8 meters above the ground and features a white-jade-like sloped steel-concrete foundation.

Xiao Hong’s Tomb covers an area of 14 square meters. The ground level of the tomb is 0.8 meters high, and both the burial chamber and the tombstone are carved from gray granite. The burial chamber is rectangular, measuring 1.9 meters in length and 0.45 meters in height, and is placed atop a stone platform made of 15 square bluestones. The tombstone inscription is gilded and carved in intaglio; the four characters “Xiao Hong’s Tomb” were inscribed by Xiao Hong’s husband during her lifetime, Mr. Duanmu Hongliang. The surroundings of the tomb are enclosed by railings styled after classical Chinese bridges, resembling white marble. Xiao Hong’s Tomb is known as the “Tomb of Black Hair.” Inside the coffin chamber lies a lock of black hair, cut from Xiao Hong at the time of her passing and treasured by Mr. Duanmu Hongliang for nearly 50 years.

The Xiao Hong Memorial Monument and Tomb were designated as a provincial-level cultural heritage site in 1999.
