Former Site of the Headquarters of the CCP North Manchuria Provincial Committee
The former site of the headquarters of the CCP North Manchuria Provincial Committee is a cultural heritage site protected by Heilongjiang Province and a classic red tourism destination.
The former site of the headquarters of the CCP North Manchuria Provincial Committee is located in two caves — Cave No. 1 and Cave No. 4 — on the northern side of Guokui Peak, the main peak of West Wumaling, approximately 4.5 kilometers from the Xiling Forest Farm of the Wumahe Forestry Bureau in Yichun City. These caves were naturally formed and slightly modified by the anti-Japanese guerrilla fighters before being put into use.
In the spring of 1938, the temporary CCP North Manchuria Provincial Committee led the various units of the Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army (NAJUA) in conducting guerrilla warfare against the Japanese in the deep mountains and dense forests of West Wumaling. From the winter of 1938 to the end of 1940, the Ninth and Twelfth Detachments of the Third Route Army of the NAJUA established a uniform factory and a hospital at the back of the outpost cave near the provincial committee's headquarters. In January 1940, the Tenth Special Meeting of the temporary CCP North Manchuria Provincial Committee was held here. The outpost cave is 10 meters deep, with an entrance 7.50 meters wide and 3 meters high. The cave used by the Secretariat is 7 meters deep, with an entrance 3.4 meters wide, 2.5 meters high, and the opening 2 meters above ground, and both cave entrances face due south.
After the temporary CCP North Manchuria Provincial Committee moved to the secret camp at Guokui Peak, Cave No. 4 served as the office space where the Secretariat handled documents, while Cave No. 1 functioned as the communications outpost of the provincial committee. It was responsible for both security and communication tasks. This location was kept strictly confidential; at that time, aside from the main leaders of the provincial committee and designated guards who also served as couriers, no one else knew of its existence. As a result, the provincial committee was able to operate securely here for two years.
In the autumn of 1980, veterans of the NAJUA such as Li Min, Zhang Xiang, Gao Yulin, and Wang Fuchen revisited the former site of the CCP North Manchuria Provincial Committee. Zhang Xiang inscribed the words “Standing Guard for the Sake of Resisting Japan and Saving the Nation” on the right side of the outpost cave. In October 1984, the Wumahe District Committee built a monument in front of the outpost cave to commemorate the heroic achievements of the NAJUA and to promote revolutionary tradition education. The NAJUA veteran Chen Lei inscribed the monument with the text “Former Site of the CCP North Manchuria Provincial Committee.” The monument consists of a base and a body. The base is 1.55 meters long, 1.10 meters high, and 1 meter wide. The body is 3.65 meters high, 0.85 meters wide, and 0.40 meters thick. In recent years, despite financial constraints, the Wumahe Forestry Bureau has invested over one million yuan to renovate the site. Many Party members, cadres, employees, and local residents have visited the site, making it an important base for revolutionary tradition education.
