Taipinggou Ancient Town

Located 85 kilometers northwest of Luobei County, the ancient town of Taipinggou boasts a long history. It is the birthplace of China’s historic “Guandu Gold Rush” (Guanyin Mountain–Dulu River), which was as renowned as the gold rush in the American West. With its crisscrossing gullies and abundant gold deposits, the area attracted a flood of gold prospectors. During the Tongzhi era of the Qing Dynasty, the Qing government exiled captured Taiping Rebellion soldiers here to mine for gold as punishment for suppressing the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom, and the town thus earned the name Taipinggou (Peaceful Valley).
