General Zhao Shangzhi Memorial Hall

The General Zhao Shangzhi Memorial Hall is a classic red tourism destination and a patriotic education base.

To commemorate the martyrs and educate future generations, in 1984 the Baoquanling Farm Administration decided to build the General Zhao Shangzhi Memorial Hall and Monument on the northern hillside of the Baoquanling Farm area. In 1984, donations from members of the Communist Youth League and Young Pioneers of the Baoquanling Administration led to the construction of the Martyr Zhao Shangzhi Monument. In 1985, with approval and funding from the provincial Party committee and government, the General Zhao Shangzhi Memorial Hall was constructed and officially opened to the public in 1988, showcasing the heroic deeds of General Zhao Shangzhi. This site has been designated as a Revolutionary Tradition Education Base for Youth by the Heilongjiang Provincial Reclamation Bureau, a Heilongjiang Provincial National Defense Education Base by the Heilongjiang Provincial National Defense Education Leading Group, a National Defense Education Base by the People’s Armed Forces Department of Baoquanling Sub-bureau, and a Patriotic Education Base by Baoquanling Senior High School. Every year, it attracts thousands of visitors who come here to receive revolutionary tradition education and participate in various commemorative activities.

Zhao Shangzhi was born in October 1908 in Chaoyang County, Liaoning Province. In 1919, he moved with his family to Harbin and became involved in student activism at an early age. In the summer of 1925, he joined the Chinese Communist Party, becoming one of the earliest party members in the Northeast. That winter, he was sent by the Party to Guangzhou to attend the fifth class of the Whampoa Military Academy, where he also joined the Young Soldiers’ Association under the leadership of the CCP. In May 1926, dissatisfied with Chiang Kai-shek’s instigation of the “Zhongshan Warship Incident” and the “Reorganization of Party Affairs,” he resolutely withdrew from the Whampoa Military Academy.
