Located in the northeastern part of Jiamusi City at the confluence of the Songhua River and the Heilongjiang River on the southern bank of Sanjiang, Tongjiang Port lies on the southern bank of the Sanjiang area, opposite Russia’s Jewish Autonomous Oblast, with a border line of 165 kilometers. Tongjiang Port was one of the earlier ports opened to the outside world. On March 18, 1986, the State Council approved the reopening of Tongjiang Port. That very year, the first trade voyage was launched, opening a new chapter in Jiamusi’s border trade. Over the past few years, Tongjiang Port has handled over 550,000 tons of trade goods, valued at more than 3 billion Swiss francs. Trade has diversified from the previous single form of barter to include cash transactions and multiple channels, showing very promising prospects. Tongjiang Port’s foreign trade is not limited to nearby regions across the river such as Leninskoye, Birobidzhan, and Khabarovsk, but has expanded to Sakhalin Oblast, the Yakutia Autonomous Republic, Tyumen Oblast, Novosibirsk, the Buryatia Autonomous Republic, Krasnoyarsk, and even parts of European Russia. The opening of Tongjiang Port has attracted businesses from 19 provinces and cities across China, with over 420 entities engaging in border trade here, and the port has established sister-city relationships with more than 50 cities. Meanwhile, international merchants frequently visit Tongjiang to explore business opportunities. There are now eight foreign-funded enterprises in Tongjiang.

Tongjiang Port enjoys relatively convenient transportation and communication. It is the terminus of the Harbin–Tongjiang Highway, which runs parallel to the Songhua River, linking to Jiamusi, Harbin, and downstream along the Heilongjiang River to Khabarovsk. The port is 35 kilometers south of the Fuyu–Qianjiang Railway. Tongjiang Port features deep waters and a wide river, capable of berthing 5,000-ton cargo ships, making it a natural harbor in the Songhua and Heilongjiang river systems. Tourist routes have been opened from Tongjiang to Birobidzhan and Tongjiang to Khabarovsk. Approved by the Ministry of Transport, road transport services from Jiamusi via Tongjiang to Khabarovsk are also set to be launched.
