The ancient city is located 2.5 kilometers northwest of Chaoyang Township, Dehui County. It is named Shuangchengzi Ancient City because it has both an inner and an outer city. The outer city is a relatively large ancient city dating back to the Liao and Jin periods, with rammed earth walls. It faces due south and north, with each side of the wall being 1,000 meters long and a total perimeter of 4,000 meters. Due to wind erosion and rain damage, the ancient city is severely damaged. The eastern and southern walls have been leveled, while the western and northern walls retain slight traces. The city gates are no longer identifiable. The inner city was built in 1900 as a defense against surprise attacks by Tsarist Russia. It is roughly square-shaped, oriented at 350 degrees, with the eastern wall 410 meters long, the western wall 411 meters long, and both the southern and northern walls 416 meters long, totaling a perimeter of 1,753 meters. The western wall is relatively well preserved, while the eastern, southern, and northern walls are incomplete. The remaining wall fragments are about 2 meters high, with tops 2–3 meters wide and bases ranging from 6 to 9 meters wide. There is a gate 10 meters wide at the center of both the southern and northern walls. At the southern corner of the city, traces of a bastion remain, while the other three corners have been destroyed. The city walls were constructed using rammed earth.

Transportation is convenient; in 1997, 15.7 kilometers of cement roads were built with an investment of tens of millions, and all village roads are gravel-surfaced to ensure smooth vehicle access. The area boasts abundant water resources, with the Second Songhua River encircling much of Chaoyang, allowing for full utilization of aquatic advantages to develop entertainment venues such as tourist boats and waterside restaurants.
