The Former Site of Northeastern University is a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level.

The Former Site of Northeastern University is among the fifth batch of Major Historical and Cultural Sites Protected at the National Level.

It is located in Liaoning Province, classified as a significant modern historical site and representative architecture, with the designation number 547900, and situated in Shenyang City, Liaoning Province.

The Former Site of Northeastern University is located on the east side of Beiling Street in Huanggu District, Shenyang, along the north bank of the Xin Kai River. Its construction began in 1923 and was completed progressively by 1930. Northeastern University was a higher education institution jointly established by Fengtian and Heilongjiang provinces during the rule of Zhang Zuolin over the northeast region, and it was the largest comprehensive university in the Huanggu District of Shenyang in the early 20th century, comprising five colleges: Arts, Law, Science, Engineering, and Education. After Zhang Xueliang became president in 1928, he implemented coeducation, added new colleges, recruited professors, and vigorously developed sports. A number of renowned scholars, such as Zhang Shizhao and Liang Sicheng, taught here. The university trained a group of outstanding revolutionary and construction talents for the country and holds an important place in the history of modern Chinese education. The architecture of the Former Site of Northeastern University combines Chinese and Western styles, with each main building featuring unique characteristics and being well-preserved. It forms an outstanding ensemble of modern architecture, possessing high historical, artistic, and scientific value.

The original site of Northeastern University (No. 45, Beiling Street, Huanggu District, Shenyang)

(1) Hanqing Stadium

Protected Area: East – north to the prefabricated component factory of the Huanggu District Residential Construction Company; South – outer wall on the south; West – north to the inner red line on the south side of Taishan Road.

Construction Control Zone: A Class III Construction Control Zone extends 150 meters south beyond the protected area.

(2) College of Arts

Protected Area: East – 45 meters outside the east wall foundation; South – 20 meters outside the south wall foundation; West – 20 meters outside the west wall foundation; North – 45 meters outside the north wall foundation.

(3) College of Law

Protected Area: East – 45 meters outside the east wall foundation; South – 10 meters outside the south wall foundation; West – 20 meters outside the west wall foundation; North – 20 meters outside the north wall foundation.

(4) President’s Office Building

Protected Area: East – 20 meters outside the east wall foundation; South – 20 meters outside the south wall foundation; West – 20 meters outside the west wall foundation; North – 20 meters outside the north wall foundation.

(5) Library

Protected Area: East – 20 meters outside the east wall foundation; South – 30 meters outside the south wall foundation; West – 20 meters outside the west wall foundation; North – 20 meters outside the north wall foundation.

(6) College of Science and Engineering

Protected Area: East – 20 meters outside the east wall foundation; South – 20 meters outside the south wall foundation; West – 20 meters outside the west wall foundation; North – 30 meters outside the north wall foundation.

Construction Control Zone for the College of Arts, College of Law, President’s Office Building, Library, and College of Science and Engineering: East – along the 30-meter line outside the protected areas of the Library and College of Science and Engineering on the east; South – along the 60-meter line outside the protected areas of the College of Science and Engineering and President’s Office Building on the south; West – along the boundary of the protected areas of the College of Arts and College of Law on the west; North – along the boundary of the protected areas of the College of Arts and Library on the north. This constitutes a Class III Construction Control Zone.

(7) Female Dormitory

Protected Area: East – 20 meters outside the east wall foundation; South – 20 meters outside the south wall foundation; West – 20 meters outside the west wall foundation; North – 20 meters outside the north wall foundation.

(8) Male Dormitory

Protected Area: East – 30 meters outside the east wall foundation; South – 10 meters outside the south wall foundation; West – 20 meters outside the west wall foundation; North – 20 meters outside the north wall foundation.

(9) Faculty and Staff Club

Protected Area: East – 25 meters outside the east wall foundation; South – 20 meters outside the south wall foundation; West – 30 meters outside the west wall foundation; North – 20 meters outside the north wall foundation.

(10) Faculty and Staff Residences (within the Shenyang Military Region Compound)

Protected area: Within a radius of 70 meters centered on the roundabout's central point.

General construction control zone of the former site of Northeastern University: East to the red line on the west side of Lingdong Street, north to the red line on the south side of Taishan Road, west to the red line on the east side of Beiling Street, and south to the planned red line on the north side of Xinkai River – Chongshan East Road, within which it is designated as a Category V construction control zone.
