Shenyang Aircraft Museum is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction.

The Shenyang Aircraft Museum is the first large-scale exhibition hall in China to systematically introduce the development of Chinese fighter jets and popularize aviation knowledge. It is divided into seven exhibition halls: the Preface Hall, Soaring Ambition, Majestic in the Blue Sky, Charging into Battlefields, Going Global, and Century Outlook. The museum showcases over 600 historical photos and more than 200 artifacts, combining the development of China’s fighter jets with aviation and defense knowledge. In April 2004, the Shenyang Aircraft Museum was designated as a "National Industrial Tourism Demonstration Site" by the National Tourism Administration.

The entrance gate of the Shenyang Aircraft Museum is uniquely designed — a wing-shaped structure extends from one side of the gate, with the “wing” serving as the ticket booth below. Through the sliding gate, you can see the main entrance of the museum and aircraft parked on the lawn. For first-time passersby, it’s sure to spark curiosity.

Upon entering the museum through the main gate, you’ll find a silver-white J-5 jet fighter parked on the lawn in the eastern woodland area. It’s China’s first supersonic jet fighter, with the red number 56719 on its fuselage marking the date of its successful test flight. This aircraft is modeled after the Soviet MiG-17EF fighter, and Chinese air and naval forces used it to shoot down or damage over 40 invading F-86s and other aircraft. On February 13, 1958, Mao Zedong inspected Shenyang Aircraft Corporation and observed this very type of aircraft.

Near the eastern fence, there are planes such as the Qiang-5, the prototype J-6, the prototype Jiao-Jiao-6, the J-7, and the J-6III. There’s also a J-7 painted in blue camouflage, a J-8 in desert camouflage colors, and a J-8II. On the western lawn leading to the main hall sits a massive military-green transport aircraft with a distinctive double-deck wing configuration.

The main hall of the museum is a four-story building with a round dome, pale yellow walls, and sky-blue glass, covering a construction area of 4,800 square meters. The main hall has upper and lower levels; the lobby exhibit includes a plane on display with photos of national leaders visiting Shenyang Aircraft Corporation lining the surrounding walls. The ceiling connects to the second floor and features three hanging aircraft models.

The “Soaring Ambition” exhibition primarily showcases how Shenyang Aircraft Corporation grew from humble beginnings—starting with repairs and evolving into aircraft manufacturing. Among the photos, a memorable one shows General Zhang Xueliang ordering the construction of Beiling Airport and the establishment of a Northeast aviation factory by the Northeast Border Defense Army in 1930, though the project was halted due to the Japanese invasion. Later occupied by Japanese forces, the airport seized over 260 aircraft and became a base for Japanese air attacks against the Chinese people. One physical exhibit is a boundary stone discovered in 1999 by power plant workers at Shenyang Aircraft Corporation during site clearing—it served as evidence of Japanese military presence and factory operations near the site. The Chinese dream of “saving the nation through aviation” was only realized after the founding of New China. In 1951, the predecessor of Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, State-owned Factory 112, was officially established and supplied significant equipment to the Chinese Volunteer Air Force during the Korean War.

On the stairway wall between the first and second floors hang group photos of several generations of Shenyang Aircraft employees who worked there. The Jin Lianzuo family had 23 members employed at the factory across three generations, contributing a cumulative 485 years of service by the factory’s 50th anniversary. Walking up the stairs and viewing these images evokes deep respect.

Since fighter jets are the most numerous, widely applied, and fastest-developing category among military aircraft—and the most advanced aviation technologies are usually first applied to them—a country’s level of fighter jet development typically reflects its aviation science and technology capabilities. The subsequent exhibitions from “Majestic in the Blue Sky” to “Century Outlook” primarily focus on the development of fighter jets in China and the application of aviation technology in other fields.

On the second-floor exhibition hall, the most eye-catching displays are hands-on, real-life aircraft components, including the forward fuselage, cockpit, wings, horizontal stabilizers, composite materials, sculpted figures, ejection seats, titanium alloy structures, aircraft guns, rocket launchers, various instruments, onboard equipment, and more than 20 types of aircraft models. Visitors may also be interested in the 1:2 concept aircraft model, full-scale static test simulation system, WP-6 engine, high-speed wind tunnel simulator, automated warehouse demo, and the D-4 hovercraft simulator.

Shenyang Aircraft Museum is located at No.1 Lingbei Street, Huanggu District, Shenyang City. Established in 2001, it is a large-scale, professional science museum that integrates the history of China’s fighter jet development with aviation knowledge. The museum covers an area of 25,000 square meters and consists of both outdoor and indoor exhibition areas.

The outdoor exhibition area includes a leisure plaza, service facilities, and a display zone featuring various types of fighter jets produced by Shenyang Aircraft Corporation. The indoor exhibition hall is divided into seven sections: the Preface Hall, Soaring Ambition, Majestic in the Blue Sky, Charging into Battlefields, Going Global, and Century Outlook. It houses over 660 precious historical photos and more than 200 artifacts.
