Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum

The Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum serves as a science education base and a patriotic education base.

The Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum is located on the campus of Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in the northern part of Shenyang city, adjacent to Beiling Park. The museum covers a construction area of over 4,200 square meters and showcases the development trajectory and achievements of traditional Chinese medicine over thousands of years.

Venue Introduction

The Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Museum consists of the Medical History Museum, Human Life Science Museum, Traditional Chinese Medicine Specimen Museum, Medical History Education Museum, and University History Museum. The total construction area is approximately 4,200 square meters.

Medical History Museum

Established in 1962, this museum underwent two reconstructions in 1984 and 2008 due to the university’s development needs. The current new pavilion covers an area of nearly 600 square meters and houses over 400 cultural relics. It displays the essence of traditional Chinese medicine through artifacts, landscapes, paintings, charts, photographs, and literature, with exhibits also highlighting the regional characteristics of Liaoning Province.

In addition to serving as a venue for scenario-based and practical teaching, the museum also features an experience area where visitors can interact with replicas of ancient medical instruments such as acupuncture needles, cupping devices, gua sha tools, and massage equipment. This immersive experience allows visitors to journey through centuries of traditional Chinese medicine history and feel the magical charm of Chinese medical heritage.

Human Life Science Museum

The Human Life Science Museum was expanded in 2006 based on the former Human Anatomy Specimen Museum, Morphological Specimen Museum, and Pathological Specimen Museum. The museum is divided into six exhibition areas: Embryology, Normal Human Anatomy, Normal Human Anatomical Sections, Normal Human Acupoints and Sections, Normal Human Vascular Casts, and Human Pathological Anatomy. With a construction area of 600 square meters, it displays over 800 specimens.

University History Museum

The University History Museum was completed in 2006, covering an exhibition area of 660 square meters. The museum is divided into nine sections, featuring historical photos from the establishment of Liaoning College of Traditional Chinese Medicine, portraits of former school leaders, as well as images and inscriptions from visits by leaders at all levels over the years. It highlights the achievements of the university's rapid development in the past decade, including educational conditions, discipline construction, faculty team, talent cultivation, teaching and education, scientific research, Party building and ideological work, mass organizations, campus culture, international exchanges, and social services. The museum also displays honors, trophies, and certificates won by the university in various competitions over the years, along with academic monographs and teaching materials authored by faculty, as well as teaching and office equipment since the university’s founding. The exhibition is rich in content, primarily presented through photographs, supplemented by physical displays and textual materials.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Specimen Museum

The Traditional Chinese Medicine Specimen Museum of Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine is located in the Life Science Road of ShuangD Port in Dalian, by the Bohai Sea—on the campus of Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Established in 1960, after more than 40 years of continuous collection, organization, and expansion, it has now developed into a comprehensive specimen museum integrating teaching, scientific research, and science education.

The museum consists of eight exhibition rooms: National Authentic Medicinal Materials Room, Herbal Medicine Room, Animal Medicine Room, Mineral Medicine Room, Herbarium Room, Liquid-Preserved Specimen Room, Patent Chinese Medicine Room, and Fake Medicinal Materials Room, with a total construction area of 1,400 square meters. It houses nearly 7,100 varieties of traditional Chinese medicinal material specimens, including over 500 varieties of prepared herbal slices, over 300 varieties of raw medicinal materials, over 100 varieties of fake samples, over 200 bottles of liquid-preserved specimens, and over 6,000 herbarium sheets. The collection includes precious items such as wild ginseng, deer antler, musk, cordyceps, bezoar, and antelope horn, as well as items prohibited for medicinal use, such as rhinoceros horn and tiger bone.

Medical History Education Museum

Established in 1984, the Medical History Education Museum mainly introduces the brief history of the development of traditional Chinese medicine and the close relationship between ancient Chinese culture and traditional Chinese medicine through murals, multimedia displays, and exhibitions of ancient Chinese medical texts. The museum covers a construction area of 660 square meters and houses over 430 cultural relics. It showcases the development achievements of traditional Chinese medicine through artifacts, landscapes, paintings, charts, photographs, and literature, with exhibits also highlighting the regional characteristics of Liaoning Province.

Important Role

For many years, the museum has served the teaching and research of Liaoning University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and is home to the university’s Research Center for Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture, which has become a key research base for humanities and social sciences in Liaoning Province and a national co-built laboratory. The museum is also an important window for external services and exchanges of the university. In recent years, the museum has opened its campus resources to society and has been established as a national, Liaoning provincial, and Shenyang municipal science education base, as well as a Liaoning Provincial Traditional Chinese Medicine Culture Publicity and Education Base and a Shenyang Patriotic Education Base. It plays an important role in promoting human life science and popularizing knowledge about traditional Chinese medicine.
