Wolu Mountain Scenic Area

Wolu Mountain Scenic Area is located in Songshuyang Village, Yangjiapuzi Town, 26 kilometers south of Xiuyan County. It is renowned for its elegant peaks, unique temples, and beautiful scenery. Within the mountain lies a bluestone ridge about 100 meters long, shaped like the back of a reclining deer. Legend has it that in ancient times, a Taoist priest riding a black deer lived in the mountain and after his death transformed into the stone ridge, hence the name "Wolu Mountain" (Reclining Deer Mountain). The mountain features steep terrain, breathtaking beauty, and scenic spots scattered throughout.

Stone Ancient Temple – Xiaosheng Temple

Located at the foot of Wolu Mountain, it is referred to by locals as the "Old Ancient Temple" due to its long history. Originally built during the Tang Dynasty as a thatched hut, it was reconstructed with stone during the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty. It is currently the only well-preserved stone ancient temple in Liaoning Province. Locals call it the "Old Ancient Temple." The main hall of Xiaosheng Temple consists of three rooms; apart from the doors and windows, the walls, pillars, beams, roof, and ridge are all carved from stone and assembled with mortise and tenon joints. The surrounding walls are built with strip stones, while stone pillars support the crossbeams, and large stone tiles cover the roof seamlessly. All the Buddha statues inside the temple are also carved from stone. Even more astonishingly, the second ridge beam of the temple roof can predict the weather—when rain is approaching, a small area of the beam becomes slightly damp the day before: “light rain brings slight dampness, heavy rain brings more, and no rain brings none.” Outside the temple, there is a stone bell tower on the east side and a stele forest on the west, featuring over 70 stone tablets from different eras.

Songshuyang (Pine Sheep)

Songshuyang is the main peak of Wolu Mountain, standing at an elevation of 519 meters, standing alone amidst surrounding peaks. From a distance, the stone cliffs and ancient pines on the summit form a shape resembling a mountain goat, hence the name "Songshuyang" (Pine Sheep). The local pronunciation resembles "Songshuyang" (Pine Sprout), which became the origin of the place name.

Stone Eaves Waterfall View

About 100 meters from the summit, a huge rock juts out from the cliff, resembling an eave. Beneath it lies a flat stone surface of about 400 square meters, capable of accommodating a hundred people. In summer, stream water flows onto the stone eave, forming a waterfall over 20 meters wide that cascades down to the ground. Over time, the rock surface has been worn with orderly, wavy patterns, creating a unique sight.

Lie on Stone and Listen to Pines

Not far from the Stone Eaves Waterfall View is a cliff where a massive rock stands about a zhang (approximately 3.3 meters) tall, flat on top and suitable for lying down. Surrounded by lush green pines in various shapes and poses, lying on the rock at dusk with a gentle breeze and the rustling of pine trees creates a uniquely pleasant experience.

Transportation Tips: Take a shuttle bus from the county town, available daily from 6:30 AM to 3:30 PM, every 30 minutes. Get off at Songshuyang and walk for 30 minutes to reach the site.

Visiting Tips: Currently no entrance fee. It’s best to bring your own lunch for a hiking trip, and plan for a same-day round trip.
