The Beihai Dragon Palace Sea Erosion Landform Scenic Belt

About ten kilometers north of Bayuquan District along the coastline lies a breathtaking sea erosion landform scenic belt that is truly one of the world’s wonders. This scenic area stretches roughly two kilometers from north to south, and locals commonly refer to it as the “Beihai Dragon Palace Street.”

Experts from the State Oceanic Administration, the Liaoning Provincial Department of Marine Fisheries, and other institutions have determined through on-site surveys that this unique natural landform, shaped by seawater erosion, boasts a history of 1.8 billion years. Over millions of years, through the shifting of seas and lands, the relentless battering of wind and waves, and the ebb and flow of tides, the bedrock coastline has formed an extraordinarily distinctive sea erosion landscape. Here, time spans far beyond mere millions of years—these rocks have been carved and polished by the Bohai Sea for 1.8 billion years, giving rise to spectacular formations such as sea cliffs, sea caves, sea platforms, sea pillars, and sea bridges. Sea pillars stand like masts along the shore, while sea caves are thoughtfully dotted among them, creating a magnificent and enchanting seascape.

Through the miraculous craftsmanship of nature, some of the rocks here have been transformed into the likeness of the Maitreya Buddha; others have been sculpted into varied stone figure clusters; some jab skyward like sharp swords, unstoppable in their thrust; some resemble turtles crawling ashore, swaying slowly as they move… all are strikingly lifelike. As visitors explore further, they will find rocks that look like dragons plunging into the sea, fiery steeds soaring into the sky, or golden toads gazing out at the ocean… Each formation is vividly realistic, capturing both form and spirit with remarkable accuracy. Many rock bodies also contain straight, tooth-like veins that are nothing short of astounding. The renowned calligrapher Shen Yanyi once composed a poem in praise of this unique sea erosion landscape: “Primitive and ancient, through eons it remains; its age, beyond count, spans untold millions. I envy your brush, free from trivial artistry—true landscapes take the highest place.”
