Climate differences between north and south, e-Visa application, daily spending, and often overlooked dress code details.

Visas & Entry

Most foreign visitors need a visa to visit Vietnam. The most common option is the e-Visa: apply online via the Vietnamese Immigration Department’s official website by submitting your passport and a photo, pay around 25 USD, and the visa is usually issued within 3–5 working days, allowing single-entry stays of up to 90 days. You can also arrange a “visa approval letter + entry visa” through a travel agency. Phu Quoc Island offers visa-free entry (for up to 30 days) for eligible travelers, making it ideal for short island trips.

Upon arrival, you’ll need to fill out an entry declaration form. Cash amounts exceeding 5,000 USD must be declared.

Best Time to Visit

  • Northern Vietnam (Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Sapa): The dry season runs from October to April; December to February is cold and foggy.
  • Central Vietnam (Da Nang, Hoi An, Hue): The best months are from February to May; September to December sees more rain and possible typhoons.
  • Southern Vietnam (Ho Chi Minh City, Mui Ne, Phu Quoc): The dry season is from November to April; May to October is rainy but usually brief.
