Transport Guide 2026-10-03 0 views
How to get from the airport to the city, how to take a matatu without getting lost, how much a safari private car costs per day, whether you need to fly to see gorillas, plus intercity route prices and safe urban transport options.

Arrival and Getting into Town

Entebbe International Airport is about 40 km from Kampala. Ways to get into town: negotiate with the airport taxi desk for around 80,000–120,000 UGX; official shuttle buses (Gateway, Shuttle) cost about 30,000–50,000 UGX per person; ride-hailing apps (Uber, Bolt) usually quote around 50,000–90,000 UGX, and are the most transparent option. For nighttime arrivals, it’s best to book a hotel transfer in advance.

Intercity Transport

If your budget allows, it’s highly recommended to take a domestic flight (Aerolink, Bar Aviation, Entebbe–Kihiihi/Kisoro) to gorilla parks, cutting the 9-hour mountain drive down to 1 hour. Luggage is limited to 15 kg in soft bags.

Urban Transport

  • Ride-Hailing: Uber and Bolt have good coverage in Kampala and Entebbe, and are the safest option for travelers.
  • Matatu: Local minibuses run fixed routes, are extremely cheap but have complicated routes and no signage—best avoided by first-timers.
  • Boda-Boda (motorbike taxis): Great for beating traffic, but always wear a helmet and only use officially uniformed drivers. Keep valuables on your front.
  • Safari Private Car: A Toyota Land Cruiser with driver and fuel costs around 150–250 USD per day, and is the standard way to reach national parks. Book through a reputable safari company and confirm the itinerary in writing.

Practical Tips

  • Long-distance buses are safer during the day; avoid overnight buses if possible.
  • Kampala has severe rush-hour traffic in the mornings and evenings—plan double the time when catching intercity flights.
  • Park gates have set opening hours (around 7:00–19:00), so plan your private car itinerary backward from sunset.
  • Dusty gravel roads are common—bring a mask and dust-proof camera bag. Four-wheel drive is essential in the rainy season.
