Arrival and Getting into Town
| Airport | Getting into Town | Time/Price |
| Kigali International Airport (KGL) | Taxi/Ride-hailing | Approximately 15–25 minutes, about 10,000–20,000 Rwandan Francs |
| Kigali International Airport (KGL) | Hotel Transfer | Depends on hotel arrangements, usually requires advance booking |
Getting Around the City
- Motorcycle Taxi (Moto Taxi): A common short-distance transport option in Kigali. It’s fast and affordable, but wearing a helmet is mandatory. You can find them at designated stands or book via apps.
- Bus: Kigali has bus routes covering main urban areas. Fares are fixed and are usually purchased at the bus stops.
- Taxis and Ride-hailing: City taxis generally require price negotiation. Ride-hailing apps are available in some areas, offering relatively transparent pricing.
Between Cities
- Kigali – Musanze (Volcanoes National Park): Approximately 2–3 hours by car.
- Kigali – Nyungwe: Approximately 4–6 hours by car.
- Kigali – Gisenyi (Lake Kivu): Approximately 3–4 hours by car.
- Kigali – Akagera National Park: Approximately 2–3 hours by car.
- Long-distance buses are also available for interregional travel, but they offer less flexibility. Private car hire is better suited for linking multiple scenic spots.
Tips
- National parks and gorilla trekking often require early morning assembly, so it’s recommended to stay near the park the night before.
- Rwanda’s road conditions are among the best in East Africa, but rural roads are winding and steep. Drive with caution if renting a car.
- Wearing a helmet is compulsory when riding a motorcycle taxi. Slow down and drive carefully on rainy or slippery days.
- For private car hire and guides, it’s advisable to book through licensed travel agencies. Costs typically include fuel and driver services.
