Kigali → Volcanoes National Park → Nyungwe → Lake Kivu → Akagera → Kigali. It’s best to travel by private car or join a guided tour. Most road segments take 2–5 hours. Plan your gorilla trekking — the most physically demanding activity — for when you’re freshest.
Arrive at Kigali International Airport and check into your hotel in the city. In the afternoon, visit the Kigali Genocide Memorial, then explore the Kigali Conference Centre and nearby commercial areas. Dine at a local restaurant in the evening. Day one is for adjusting to the time zone and acclimatising to the high altitude.
In the morning, visit the Inema Arts Center or a cooperative like Inatri to shop for woven crafts, wood carvings, and pottery. You can also tour a local art space or coffee roastery. In the afternoon, drive about 2–3 hours to Ruhengeri (also known as Musanze) in northern Rwanda. Stay near Volcanoes National Park to prepare for the next day’s trek.
Early in the morning, gather at the park headquarters for a briefing and group assignment based on fitness level. Then, follow your guide into the forest to track a gorilla family. Once found, you’ll spend an hour observing them, as per regulations. The trek can last several hours at high elevation — pace yourself accordingly. In the afternoon, you may choose to go golden monkey tracking or visit a local community.
In the morning, you can hike Mount Bisoke or explore the area around Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo. In the afternoon, drive south, stopping by the Huye National Museum en route, and stay near Nyungwe.
Start your day with chimpanzee tracking or a forest bird-watching walk. Later, try the famous canopy walkway — a suspension bridge dozens of metres above the rainforest floor. Nyungwe is one of Africa’s most important montane rainforests, home to various primates and bird species.
Drive to Gisenyi or Rubavu on the shores of Lake Kivu. Spend the day walking along the lake, taking a boat ride, or enjoying grilled fish by the water. Lake Kivu is a key part of the African Great Lakes region, with scenic shores — it’s also a great spot to visit coffee plantations and slow down your pace.
Head out early to Akagera National Park in the east for a safari. You may spot elephants, giraffes, zebras, buffaloes, and lions. In the afternoon, explore the shores of Lake Ihema to look for hippos and birds. Return to Kigali in the evening and depart according to your flight schedule.
