Dress and dietary restrictions in a multi-religious country, and how to make the most of the visa exemption policy.

Visas and Entry

Most foreign visitors can apply for a visa exemption (policy subject to change) or a e-visa (eNTRI / eVisa) when traveling to Malaysia. The eNTRI is suitable for short trips of up to 15 days, while the eVisa allows a stay of up to 30 days. It is recommended to check the latest policies on the official website of the Malaysian Immigration Department before departure.

Upon entry, you will need to show a return or onward air ticket and proof of hotel booking. Customs enforces strict limits on alcohol and tobacco.

Best Time to Visit

  • West Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Malacca): March to October is the dry season, the best time for travel.
  • East Coast (Kuantan, Terengganu): April to October is the island-hopping season; ferry services are suspended during the monsoon season from November to February.
  • East Malaysia (Sabah, Sarawak): May to September is ideal for diving, though the region is suitable for travel year-round.

  • Do not bring pork or alcoholic products into halal restaurants.
  • Use your right hand to give or receive items, as the left hand is considered unclean in Malay culture.
