Laos Travel Quick Guide: Visa Requirements, Best Time to Visit, Budget Tips, and Cultural Etiquette
Before You Go 2026-10-02 2 views
Before you go, get familiar with Laos visa requirements, the best travel seasons, budget guidelines, and Buddhist cultural etiquette. Also understand key points about currency exchange amid the kip’s depreciation. This will help you avoid many common pitfalls on your Laos trip.

Visas & Entry

Most foreign visitors can apply online for an e-Visa through official Lao government channels, or obtain a visa on arrival at Vientiane Wattay International Airport, Luang Prabang International Airport, or certain land border crossings. The standard stay is 30 days, with fees generally ranging from 20 to 40 USD depending on the entry point and currency used. If crossing overland from neighbouring regions, you may also enter Laos via the Mohan–Boten border checkpoint by taking the China–Laos Railway. Lao visa policies are subject to change, so it's a good idea to check the latest information from the nearest Lao embassy or consulate and your home country’s foreign ministry before you travel. It’s advisable to carry passport photos and some US dollar cash for on-site visa processing upon arrival.

Best Time to Visit

  • Cool Season (November–February): The weather is dry and pleasant, with Vientiane, Luang Prabang, and Vang Vieng all at their most enjoyable. This is the most recommended time to visit.
  • Hot Season (March–May): Temperatures often exceed 35°C. The middle of April is when the lively Pi Mai (Lao New Year) water festival takes place, but daytime travel can be quite uncomfortable.
  • Rainy Season (June–October): Afternoon showers are common. Waterfalls are at their fullest and the countryside is lush, but mountain roads and river activities require extra caution.

Currency & Spending

Laos uses the Lao kip (LAK), but Thai baht and US dollars are widely accepted in tourist areas. Hotels and multi-day tours are often priced in US dollars or Thai baht. Due to kip depreciation and inflation, prices have risen noticeably in recent years. It’s recommended to bring US dollars or Thai baht in cash for local exchange, and carry some small kip notes for meals, transport, and entrance fees. ATMs are available in major cities, but they typically charge high fees and have low withdrawal limits, so it’s best to withdraw larger amounts at once.

Etiquette & Taboos

  • Laos is a Buddhist country. Shoes must be removed when entering temples, and clothing should cover shoulders and knees.
  • Women should not touch monks, sit next to them, or hand items directly to them.
  • Early morning almsgiving is a religious practice. When taking photos, keep your distance, avoid using flash, and do not block the monks’ procession.
  • Using both hands to give or receive items or money shows respect. Avoid pointing at people or Buddha statues with your feet.
  • The head is considered sacred. Do not touch the head of others, especially children.
