Bulgaria 4-Day Short Trip: Sofia, Rila, and Plovdiv
Itineraries 2026-10-03 0 views 4 days
A compact 4-day itinerary: two days in the capital plus a visit to the Rila Monastery, rounded off with a stay in Plovdiv’s Old Town — a relaxed pace.

Itinerary Concept

This west-focused loop follows the route ‘Sofia — Rila — Plovdiv — Sofia’. Both trains and buses connect the cities easily, with total travel time under 10 hours. Ideal for first-time visitors or those transiting through Bulgaria.

Day 1: Central Sofia

Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and its Underground Museum → St. Sofia Church → Bulgarian Parliament and Tsar Simeon’s Garden → Stroll and shop along Vitosha Boulevard, then unwind in the evening at the Central Mineral Baths Street to experience local spa culture. All sights are accessible by metro and on foot — no car rental needed.

Day 2: Rila Monastery (Mountain Area)

All-day trip: depart early with around 2.5 hours’ drive. Spend 2–3 hours exploring the monastery, with highlights including the painted corridor and the golden-domed bell tower. Optional: add a 1-hour hike to the St. Ivan Cave. Return to Sofia in the evening. Day tours cost around 40–60 lev including transport; private transfers are extra. Note large temperature differences in the Rila Mountains — bring a jacket even in summer.

Day 3: Plovdiv (Old Town)

Catch an early morning train or bus (around 2 hours) to Plovdiv. Visit the Roman Theatre, the painted houses of the Old Town, and the Ethnographic Museum. Spend the afternoon sipping coffee and browsing craft shops in Kapana district. Stay overnight in an Old Town guesthouse to enjoy the night view, or take an evening bus back to Sofia.

Day 4: Boyana Church + Departure (Wrap-Up)

In the morning, visit Boyana Church at the foot of Vitosha Mountain (a UNESCO World Heritage Site famous for its murals — advance booking required due to limited entry). You can also take a short hike on the Vitosha Plateau nearby. In the afternoon, head to the airport based on your flight schedule. If time allows, browse for souvenirs in the ancient Roman ruins area near the Serdika metro station.

Tips

  • Boyana Church has timed entry and limits visitor numbers — book your slot in advance via the official website or on-site.
  • In Sofia, purchase a 10-lev day pass for the metro to cover all trips from the airport to the city centre and train stations.
  • Plovdiv’s Old Town has many cobblestone slopes — not ideal for suitcases. Travel light, stay overnight, and depart the next day if possible.

Extended Options

If you have an extra half day, consider adding a stop at Bachkovo Monastery (the second largest in the Balkans, about 30 minutes’ drive from Plovdiv) on Day 3. During rose season (late May to early June), consider replacing Day 4 with a day trip to the Kazanlak Rose Festival. In winter, swap Day 2 for a trip to Bansko Ski Resort — about 2 hours from Sofia.
