No Regrets: A Couple in Their 70s Embark on a Road Trip Across China
At 72 years old, Gu Xiangdong and his wife, though advanced in age, have traveled across China by self-driving and joining tour groups. Together, they have covered over 200,000 kilometers and published four travel books. Their spontaneous travels were actually inspired by Gu’s wife, Gao Zhixia, who was diagnosed with late-stage breast cancer. After three years of treatment, her condition gradually improved, which prompted Gu Xiangdong to take her on journeys. The devoted couple, both 72, make it a point to travel together periodically. Gao Zhixia openly says that after a lifetime of companionship, the happiest times have been their 20 years of traveling. The reason they can set off so spontaneously is closely tied to Gao Zhixia’s cancer battle.
More accidents in self-drive tours by Taiwanese, Koreans; Okinawa police urge rental firms not to rent cars
A male traffic division officer from the Miyako Police Station in Okinawa urged car rental companies not to rent vehicles to travelers from China and South Korea, citing high accident rates and time-consuming accident handling due to language barriers. The Ryukyu Shimpo reported that during an opinion exchange meeting with car rental operators on Miyako Island on the 24th, the officer asked them not to rent to Chinese and Korean tourists, citing a shortage of Chinese and Korean interpreters at the police station. Although the officer stated it was his personal opinion, it immediately caused an uproar. The officer said that foreigners renting cars often get involved in traffic accidents, and handling such incidents takes time. He suggested it might be better not to rent to foreign tourists who require interpreters to be dispatched to the scene, but that it's okay to rent to tourists from English-speaking countries. The report pointed out that rental operators present responded by saying they “never expected police to say something like this. We don’t mind, but now that Okinawa is actively promoting tourism, making such a negative comment is surprising.”
Cross-border self-driving tours between China and Vietnam become routine
In November last year, cross-border self-driving tours between Dongxing in China and Mong Cai in Vietnam became routine, but only groups with 5 to 20 vehicles were eligible to apply. Starting in April this year, the scope of travel agencies allowed to operate self-driving tour services expanded from the original 20 agencies in Dongxing to 100 licensed agencies across Guangxi that have outbound or border tourism qualifications; the number of cars per group crossing the border has also been reduced from a minimum of 5 to just 1.
One-day tours removed from sale; price undercutting for customers intensifies
The Tourism Bureau of the Ministry of Transportation and Communications has ordered the suspension of long-distance one-day tour packages departing from Taipei. Industry operators noted that the decline in Mainland Chinese tourists has significantly reduced the demand for tour buses, prompting many bus companies to join the cutthroat competition in the domestic tourism market by offering cheap and extensive itineraries. With some one-day tours now being taken off the shelves, there are growing concerns among operators that more buses may be left without routes, leading to further price wars to capture what remains of the market and creating a vicious cycle. The Tourism Bureau stated that one-day domestic tours originating from Taipei—such as those to Alishan, Wuling Farm, Qingjing Farm, Smangus, Guanwu, Kenting, and Hualien—are to be removed from sale due to prolonged vehicle usage or varying road conditions, which present high operational risks. For tours that require an early departure and late return, travel agencies should implement driver rotation systems, adopt diverse transportation modes, or adjust and modify itineraries.
