Beipiao Bird Fossil Nature Reserve is located within Beipiao City, Liaoning Province, with geographical coordinates at 120°45′22″

–120°52′38″ east longitude and 41°32′21″–41°37′53″ north latitude, covering a total area of 4,630 hectares. The reserve was approved for establishment by the Liaoning Provincial Government in 1997 and is dedicated to protecting rare paleontological fossils such as Sinosauropteryx, Protarchaeopteryx, and Confuciusornis.

The area lies within the mountainous and hilly region of western Liaoning, with the highest elevation reaching 449.3 meters. Its well-preserved Mesozoic strata and diverse range of fossils hold extremely significant global importance. To date, over 250 bird fossils (from 11 genera and 14 species) have been discovered, among which Sinosauropteryx and Protarchaeopteryx are considered by experts to be close to the ancestors of birds—dating much earlier than Germany’s Archaeopteryx. The era of Confuciusornis is also largely comparable to that of Germany's Archaeopteryx. This discovery fundamentally challenged the traditional view in paleontology that Archaeopteryx was the ancestor of all birds. It achieved a breakthrough in resolving one of the world’s four major challenges in the history of life development—the significant theoretical issue of the origin and early evolution of birds—thus stunning the global scientific community.

The area not only yields important bird fossils but has also produced numerous other types of fossils. In total, fossils from 6 phyla, 14 classes, and 20 categories have been found. Aside from birds, animal fossils include reptiles, fish, conchostracans, ostracods, insects, bivalves, and gastropods, along with egg and footprint fossils from 3 phyla, 8 classes, 46 genera, and 83 species. Plant fossils range from ferns to higher angiosperms, including 2 phyla, 3 subphyla, 6 classes, as well as silicified wood, seeds, and spore-pollen fossils with unclear taxonomic placements. The diversity and abundance of fossil species are rarely seen in the world. Experts both in China and abroad believe this region is very likely to be not only a center of origin and evolution for fish and certain insect groups but also an area for the origin and early evolution of birds. The establishment of the Beipiao Bird Fossil Group Nature Reserve holds great scientific significance for studying ancient geography, paleoclimate, paleoecology, and especially the evolution of life from water to land, and from water to air.
