Nine Dragons and Eighteen Rapids

The Nine Dragons and Eighteen Rapids are located along a stretch of the Wu River in Pingshi Town, Lechang City. The river winds through the landscape with rapid currents and a total drop of 65 meters. Along the riverbanks, there are numerous scenic spots such as the Dayaoshan Tunnel, Ten-Mile Gallery, Turtle Mountain, Frog Rock, Miaozijiao, and the Hanlong Ancestral Temple. The most treacherous section among the nine dragons is the Chui Long (Hanging Dragon), which attracts many tourists for sightseeing and photography, offering a thrilling experience. In the autumn of 1925, Mao Zedong also braved the rapids on a swift boat while traveling to the Guangzhou Peasant Movement Institute.

In recent years, rafting activities have been introduced at the Nine Dragons and Eighteen Rapids, drawing a continuous stream of domestic and international tourists eager to experience the adventure. The rafting experience here has been named one of the “Four Flagship Tourism Products of Guangdong Province” and an “International Tourist Route Attraction in China” by the Guangdong Provincial Tourism Administration and the National Tourism Administration.

The opening of the luxury air-conditioned tourist bus “Dayaoshan” and the heritage sightseeing mini-train “Golden Rooster” have further enriched the local tourism offerings.

The Eighteen Rapids include: Jade-Cutting Rapids, Three-Tiered Rapids, Monk Rapids, Hundred-Chicken Rapids, Xinqin Rapids, Plow-Ridge Rapids, Qimen Rapids, Small Rapids, Raincoat Rapids, Sparrow Rapids, Big Long Rapids, Slippery Stone Rapids, Slate Rapids, Flower-Rushing Rapids, Hemp Rapids, Hu Rapids, Skin-Peeled Rapids, and Zhang Rapids. Transportation: Take a bus or train from Shaoguan to Pingshi. Most rafting trips start at Pingshi, with a three-hour descent, ending at Lechang where you can take a sightseeing mini-train into downtown Lechang to visit attractions such as Ancient Buddha Caves. Afterward, head to Lechang Bus Station to return to Shaoguan (12 RMB, 1 hour), with the final stop at Wuliting Bus Station, conveniently near a bus route back to the train station.
