Addis Ababa is located in central Ethiopia and has been the capital for over a hundred years. Known as the "City of Flowers" and the "City of Eucalyptus," the city is surrounded by eucalyptus forests covering more than 50 square kilometers. In Addis Ababa, visitors can arrange tours to attractions such as the National Palace, the Ethiopian Museum (which showcases the country's arts and crafts), Africa Hall, the Menelik II Mausoleum, Trinity Church, the National Archaeological Museum, St. George’s Cathedral, and the Handcraft School through the Ethiopian Tourism Organization or local travel agencies. South of Addis Ababa lies the Koka Dam, where the Koka Hotel was once the summer palace of the former king. Two and a half hours' drive west of Addis Ababa is the Blue Nile Gorge. From Addis Ababa, travelers can follow the Historic Route to Bahir Dar to visit island monasteries and the Tississat Blue Nile Falls, or head to Gondar to explore the ancient castle of King Fasilidas, the settlements of the Beta Israel community, as well as the UNESCO-listed 12th-century rock-hewn churches of Lalibela and the ruins of the Palace of Axum.
