The Omo Valley of Ethiopia

The Omo Valley, located near the beautiful Lake Turkana in southern Ethiopia, is one of the world’s most famous prehistoric sites. Under the supervision of relevant archaeological authorities, this prehistoric site has been well preserved. A large number of hominin fossils have been excavated here, including numerous teeth, jawbones, and skeletal remains from various other parts of the body. In addition, many Stone Age stone tools have been unearthed. The evidence carried by these stone tools indicates that the Omo Valley is one of the oldest known prehistoric campsites inhabited by humans. Other evidence further suggests the earliest forms of productive human activity here—tool use. All of this evidence, together with the rich collection of hominin fossils found at the site, allows us to better understand our ancestors and the process of human evolution. Therefore, the Omo Valley is an important archaeological site. Today, the Omo Valley remains in a pristine state, with tribal traditions still intact. Women still wear exquisitely colorful garments made of animal hides, while men signify coming of age by styling their hair into distinctively colored topknots. Here, you can see women of the Mursi tribe still wearing large lip plates, and men participating in regular stick-fighting ceremonies. The women of the Hamar tribe are considered some of the most beautiful in East Africa, and the different metal ornaments they wear represent their various marital statuses. The Karo tribe is known for its body painting and dancing; other tribes such as the Tsemay, Banna, Arbore, Konso, Gabra, and Borena also have equally fascinating customs. As you wander among the lakes and forested grasslands of the Rift Valley, you will be captivated by the unexpected ancient African way of life that thrives throughout southern Ethiopia. At night, you can even camp out in the wild among these tribal communities.
