Simien Mountains National Park

Simien Mountains National Park (Simien Mountains National Park) was established in 1969, located on the plateau of northern Ethiopia, about 500 kilometers from the capital Addis Ababa, covering an area of 225 square kilometers with an average altitude of 4,000 meters. Its highest peak, Ras Dashen, rises to 4,620 meters, making it the fourth highest peak in Africa. The mountains feature dramatic peaks and rugged rocks, with steep and treacherous trails that can only be accessed on foot or by mule, making it an ideal destination for hiking enthusiasts.

To the south of the Simien Mountains lies a canyon about 1,000 meters deep, with cliffs towering vertically and forming a breathtaking sight. The mountains are home to many rare animals and birds, including at least 65 bird species and Ethiopia’s unique species such as the Ethiopian wolf, gelada baboon, and Walia ibex. Below 3,000 meters, the mountain area consists of fertile pastures and farmland; between 3,000 and 4,000 meters, it is covered with lush woodlands, mostly composed of African alpine plants; above 4,000 meters, only lichens and mosses can be found. The mountains have several campsites that provide food and lodging for hikers and tourists.
