Simien Mountains National Park is characterized by its towering peaks, deep valleys, and steep cliffs as high as 1,500 meters, forming one of the most outstanding natural landscapes in the world. Covering an area of 22,000 hectares with altitudes ranging from 1,900 to 4,430 meters, the park serves as a refuge for some of the world’s rarest animals, including Gelada baboons, Simien foxes, and Walia ibex.

The park’s flora and fauna, due to its unique terrain and altitude range, remain relatively pristine and hold special value. It also provides a sanctuary for many endangered species, such as the Ethiopian wolf, Simien fox, and Walia ibex. The Simien Mountains are part of the Takaze River basin, supplying water to downstream areas. The park features a mix of Afro-alpine forests, heath forests, highland vegetation, tropical montane grasslands, and alpine moorlands, growing plants such as heather, lobelia, solanum species, Abyssinian rose, yellow primrose, helichrysum, alchemilla, thyme, nettles, and moss. Lichens drape the trunks of high-altitude forest trees. Thyme, clover, and geranium grow along ridges and valley edges. In addition, there are 400 species of birds and 21 species of mammals.
