Lake Shala is located in the southern part of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, within the Abijatta-Shalla National Park. It measures approximately 28 kilometers in length and 12 kilometers in width, with a surface area of 329 square kilometers, a maximum depth of 266 meters, and sits at an elevation of 1,558 meters. It is the deepest lake in the East African Rift Valley lake region of Ethiopia.

Lake Shala is renowned for its sulfur hot springs along the lakeshore and is favored by many visitors for its natural and pristine beauty. The lake’s small islands are home to numerous great white pelicans, one of which is even called “Pelican Island.” The area around Lake Shala is surrounded by hot springs, and the surrounding land features many fissures caused by erosion and earthquakes. Due to the relatively high temperature of the nearby hot spring waters, the lake often appears shrouded in a misty, almost ethereal atmosphere. At the southern end of Lake Shala, various species of flamingos and other birds nest and breed. These beautiful birds freely frolic and forage on the lake, creating a harmonious natural scene.
