Sof Omar Caves
The Sof Omar Caves are located in southeastern Ethiopia, stretching 15.1 kilometers in length, making them the longest cave system in Ethiopia. The Weyib River flows through the caves. Discovered in 1897, some sources claim they form the longest cave system in Africa and the second longest in the world. Both Islam and local religions regard the caves as sacred places.
The Sof Omar Caves are one of Ethiopia’s natural landmarks. Located not far from the Bale Mountains, they are named after Sheikh Sof Omar, who sought refuge here centuries ago. For centuries, it has been a holy site in Islam, and both Christians and Muslims hold this sacred place in reverence. The interior is cool and dry, and near the cave entrance, faint light filters through cracks, illuminating the exquisite craftsmanship of the towering columns and buttresses that rise like the vaulted arches of a Gothic cathedral. The caves create an awe-inspiring and mystical atmosphere with their quiet beauty, the grandeur of their immense domes, and their otherworldly depths.
