Awash National Park

Awash National Park is one of Ethiopia's national parks, located at the southern end of the Afar Region, 225 kilometers east of Addis Ababa, bordered by the Awash River to the south, covering an area of 756 square kilometers. Established in 1966, it is Ethiopia’s first wildlife reserve and also the most fully developed wildlife sanctuary.

Awash National Park features Fantale Volcano, which stands 1,800 meters tall, giving the park abundant mineral hot springs and unique volcanic landforms. The Awash River, Ethiopia’s second-largest river, runs through the park. Due to significant elevation drops, it forms several waterfalls and carves out gorges hundreds of meters deep, creating quite a spectacular sight. Upon entering Awash National Park, the first thing you see is a vast open grassland—truly a world of wildlife. The park is mainly home to East African savanna animals, including: greater kudu, bat-eared fox, aardwolf, aardvark, colobus monkey, vervet monkey, Anubis baboon, hamadryas baboon, mountain nyala, leopard, gazelle, hippopotamus, Soemmerring's gazelle, cheetah, lion, and oryx, as well as 450 species of birds.
