Wuyao Ancient City
Wuyao Ancient City is located in Tuchengzi Village, Lihua Town, Zhuozi County. It borders Pingdingshan Mountain to the west, reclines against Wolongshan Mountain to the east, neighbors the Dahei River and the Beijing-Baotou Railway to the north, and lies adjacent to the Beijing-Zhangjiakou Expressway and National Highway 110 to the south. The site sits in a narrow valley with open and flat terrain. On the southern bank of the Dahei River behind the ancient city lie the Zhao State Great Wall and beacon towers, while the northeast features Dahei Mountain. Wuyao Ancient City is a key cultural relic protection unit at the autonomous region level. The site covers an area of 820,000 square meters and has a “品”-shaped layout, divided into eastern and western sections. The western section is further split into northern and southern parts. Parts of the city walls remain well-preserved, and the barbican, crenellations, and watchtower ruins are clearly visible. Research indicates that this was an important military fortress during the Warring States period, enduring through more than 10 dynasties from the Warring States to the Ming and Qing. By the Western Han Dynasty, it had become the seat of Wuyao County in Dingxiang Commandery, hence the name Wuyao Ancient City, serving as a key northern military stronghold of the Western Han. Discoveries from the 1980s include artifacts from the Han, Tang, and Song dynasties. The surrounding Tuchengzi Village and Dahei Mountain are still rich with legends about Fan Lihua. According to folklore, this was where Fan Lihua trained and stationed her troops. Within Dahei Mountain are ninety-nine caves, one of which is Fan Lihua Cave, containing relics such as her suspended coffin, saddle, and boots. The cave is often filled with whistling winds that sound like clashing weapons...
