Zhuozi Dragon Horn Mountain

Dragon Horn Mountain is located at the southern entrance of the Jiulongwan Scenic Area in Zhuozi County. The mountain has a pagoda-like shape, with towering and majestic peaks that present a grand and spectacular sight. A tree growing on the summit resembles a dragon’s horn, hence the name Dragon Horn Mountain. Upon closer inspection, the shape also resembles a dragon’s head, which is why it is also called Dragon Head Mountain. The mountain stands at an elevation of 1,644 meters, with a vertical height of nearly 70 meters. Its ridgeline curves from southeast to northwest, twisting like a dancing dragon in motion. The sunny slope features sheer cliffs, while the shady side is more gently sloped. On its back side, there is a winding stone path that allows hikers to climb to the summit. At the peak, there used to be a small temple of about 10 square meters, known as the Mountain God Temple, where locals worshipped the mountain deity. Due to the steep and rugged terrain, legend has it that the temple was built using bricks carried up by goats. At the mountain’s base lies a larger temple called the Zhaojun Temple. Legend says that when Wang Zhaojun was sent to marry a Xiongnu chieftain and left the Central Plains, she climbed this mountain to look back toward her homeland, overwhelmed with homesickness and tears, leaving behind a legacy of emotion. Later generations built the temple in her memory.
