Corfe Castle

Corfe Castle is located in Dorset in the southwest of England. The magnificent ruins of the castle stand atop the picturesque village of Corfe, which shares its name, making it one of the most evocative historic ruins in Britain.

The castle’s history dates back to the 11th century, when it was commissioned by William the Conqueror. Over the centuries and under the reigns of multiple kings, it was expanded into a large fortress. Much of the castle was originally built from earth and timber, with only the earliest phases constructed from stone. During the 12th and 13th centuries, the structure underwent major modifications. In 1572, Corfe Castle was sold by Queen Elizabeth I to her favourite courtier—Sir Christopher Hatton, after which it passed out of royal control. It suffered severe damage during the English Civil War in the 17th century. This poignant ruin, steeped in tales of betrayal, murder, and cruelty, is the site where King Edward was murdered by his stepmother in 978 AD. French prisoners starved King John to death in its dungeons, and the castle was later handed over to the Parliamentarians (Roundheads), who largely reduced it to ruins.

Today, Corfe Castle is managed by the National Trust and is designated as a Grade I listed historic building in the UK. It is open to visitors year-round. Here, you can enjoy stunning countryside views. This thousand-year-old castle has endured royal sabotage, rebel attacks, and sieges during the civil war. Fragments of early Norman stone walls are still visible, but what truly draws visitors is the haunting grandeur of its decay.
