The church was built starting in 1855, taking 24 years to complete, and was finished in 1879. It was designed by architect George Edmund Street and established as the founding church of Bournemouth. The church features unusual paintings, renowned stained glass and alabaster work, as well as highly popular traditional music. Its altar has been praised as "the richest Gothic Revival interior in England." The church’s spire, which rises 202 feet high, dominates the local skyline and stands as the most prominent landmark in central Bournemouth. The famous author of *Frankenstein*, Mary Shelley, and her husband are buried in St. Peter's Church.
