Highlights As soon as you step into Bath Abbey, the most striking feature is the magnificent stained glass on the east side, which depicts 56 scenes from the life of Jesus through 56 panes, including many stories from his birth to his crucifixion at the age of 33. The west side of the abbey illustrates the story of how God appeared in a dream to Bishop Oliver King, instructing him on how to build the church, as well as the image of angels climbing a ladder to heaven. Introduction Bath Abbey is an iconic landmark in Bath and the venue for the Bath International Music Festival and many other major events. It was also the site of the coronation of England’s first king.

Located in the city center, Bath Abbey was originally built in the 8th century and was reconstructed in 1499 by Bishop Oliver at the time. It is famous for its magnificent stained glass and fan-vaulted ceiling, and is known as the “Lantern of the West” due to its many windows. The Heritage Vault Museum (2.5 GBP) in the abbey’s south-side undercroft introduces the history of the abbey and its connections with high society during the Georgian period.

The courtyard in front of the church (Abbey Church Yard) often features street performers, as well as vendors selling small goods. Transportation Bath Abbey is located east of the Roman Baths in Bath. Tickets/Opening Hours Admission: 2.5 GBP (donations appreciated).

Opening Hours: 9:00–18:00 from Easter to October, 9:00–16:30 from November to Easter. Open only in the afternoon on Sundays.
