Jane Austen Centre

The Jane Austen Centre is located on Gay Street and recreates Austen’s life during her time in Bath. Visitors often take photos with the wax figure of the author at the entrance. The centre also sells Jane Austen-branded cosmetics. The street where the house stands retains its appearance from 200 years ago, which is why the BBC once filmed the TV series Persuasion here.

Jane Austen has deep ties to Bath, where she spent two extended stays and wrote her breakout novel, Pride and Prejudice. In 1801, she moved to the city with her retired father and later drew on her experiences there to write Persuasion and Northanger Abbey. However, she did not care for the city’s ostentatious atmosphere, and her depiction of Bath’s high society is far less wholesome and charming than that of the countryside.
