Wells Cathedral

Wells Cathedral is located in the small town of Wells in Somerset, England, and serves as the cathedral church of the Diocese of Bath and Wells. The cathedral building has been designated as a Grade I listed building in the UK. It is said that parts of the movie *Harry Potter* were filmed here, adding an even more mysterious touch to its already magical architecture.

Historical records indicate that Wells Cathedral was first established in 705 AD, while the current structure was built between 1175 and 1490, and is praised as "the most poetic of English cathedrals." Since the construction of Wells Cathedral spanned a long period and was completed in phases, different sections exhibit distinct architectural styles. Generally speaking, the west façade, exterior walls, and the tower above the crossing showcase pronounced early English Gothic features, while the interior arches reflect characteristics of the high and late English Gothic styles.

The floor plan of the cathedral is similar to that of Salisbury Cathedral, featuring typical English traits. The central nave on the western side of the transept has a relatively common ribbed vault ceiling, and the arcade of the central aisle emphasizes horizontal layering as a design technique, creating a horizontal, deep space that is 20.4 meters high and over 100 meters long. The eastern side of the transept, known as the choir, primarily uses multi-branch fan-shaped ribbed vaults that rise from clustered columns as the main structural feature of the interior space. Although the "flying buttress + pier" structural system is largely absent, the X-shaped pointed arches installed to reinforce the structural integrity at the crossing area represent a successful fusion of structure, interior space, and imagination.
