Cheddar Gorge

Cheddar Gorge is located near the village of Cheddar in Somerset, England. It is a limestone gorge situated among the Mendip Hills and is considered one of the largest gorges in the UK, as well as the country’s second most spectacular natural wonder. The Cheddar Caves within the gorge were discovered in 1903, where the oldest complete human skeleton in Britain was found, known as the Cheddar Man, dating back over 9,000 years.

Cheddar Gorge is a limestone gorge, formed during the last Ice Age when rushing waters cut through the plateau to create this stunning landscape. The deep, serene gorge and steep, rugged cliffs attract many rock climbing enthusiasts. General visitors enjoy exploring the cave’s stalactites and stalagmites, while those who love sports and hiking often choose to trek along the cliff tops above the gorge, admiring the rock walls and watching vehicles pass through the valley below. Moreover, Cheddar Gorge is also the place described as the “dreadful abyss” in the writings of novelist Daniel Defoe.

According to a survey on the most beautiful regions in the UK, the Lake District ranks first, followed by the Scottish Highlands, with Cheddar Gorge coming in third. The village of Cheddar is also known as one of the most picturesque villages in England. Most houses in Cheddar are built from black rock, and the famous Cheddar cheese gets its name from being produced here. The caves within the gorge offer a stable temperature and high humidity, making them an ideal place for storing and aging cheese.
