Wells City

Wells is a city located in Somerset, England, south of the Mendip Hills. It has held city status since 1205 and is now the second smallest city in all of England.

The Grade I listed Wells Cathedral is the area’s most famous attraction. The cathedral was originally founded in 705, while the current structure was built between 1175 and 1490. It is praised as “the most poetic of English cathedrals” and is an outstanding example of English Gothic architecture. It is said that parts of the Harry Potter films were shot here, adding an extra layer of mystique to its already magical architecture. Nearby, the Wells Museum, established in 1893, showcases a wealth of archaeological finds that reflect Wells’ history, including fossils dating back to the Stone and Iron Ages, as well as recently discovered animal skeletons and cave exhibits.

Also not to be missed are the picturesque Bishop’s Palace, the magnificent St Cuthbert’s Church, Europe’s best-preserved and oldest continuously inhabited street in Britain, and the Wells Zoo, which is a favorite among children.
