Bramall Hall

Bramall Hall is located in Greater Manchester, England, and is a large Tudor-style building situated on the outskirts of Bramhall in the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport. This entirely timber-framed structure includes parts dating back to the 14th century, with subsequent renovations carried out between the 16th and 19th centuries. The building is now a museum set within a 70-acre estate featuring lakes, woodlands, and gardens, and is open to the public.

Turning back the pages of history to Anglo-Saxon England, Bramall Hall was first recorded in the Domesday Book completed in 1086. From the late 14th century, the Davenport family established the current Bramall Hall estate, where they lived for around 500 years until 1877, when they sold nearly 2,000 acres of the property to the Manchester Freeholders Company, which planned to develop the land for residential housing. Later, over 50 acres of Bramall Hall and the remaining parkland were sold to a wealthy business family—the Nevill family. In 1925, John Henry Davies purchased the estate, and local government did not acquire ownership of the land until 1935.

Today, Bramall Hall and its museum are publicly owned by the Metropolitan Borough of Stockport. Official descriptions refer to Bramall Hall as “the most prestigious historic building in the conservation area.” The timber-framed Bramall Hall contains multiple great halls, chambers, and storage rooms, with some sections retaining their original 14th-century appearance. The walls feature many exquisite and historically significant murals.
