Manchester Town Hall is the official primary political and diplomatic venue of Manchester, the second-largest city in the United Kingdom. The building was completed in 1887, not very large in area but standing 286 feet tall, and cost one million pounds to construct. It is an old yet well-preserved Gothic structure located in Albert Square in the city center, directly opposite the monument commemorating Queen Victoria’s husband and other great figures.

Approaching the building, its overall grandeur is striking, and the best way to appreciate it is to walk around the entire structure to fully take in its majestic presence. Without doubt, Manchester Town Hall is one of the most important symbols of the city during the Industrial Revolution, when Manchester was one of the most prosperous cities in Europe. For art lovers, especially those interested in architecture, this building is not to be missed. In Guy Ritchie’s film "Sherlock Holmes," Manchester Town Hall was used as an exterior filming location in place of London’s Houses of Parliament.

Inside Manchester Town Hall, various sculptures and elaborate decorations can be seen everywhere, and the floors are covered with mosaic tiles featuring the “bee” emblem — a symbol of Manchester’s industry. The hall is particularly imposing, adorned with works by the famous 17th-century painter Ford Madox Brown, depicting the historical glory of Manchester’s industrial development. The hall is surrounded by banquet rooms of various sizes and styles, all arranged in a highly harmonious and elegant manner. Most notably, at the entrance of the town hall stand statues of scientists John Dalton and James Joule. As soon as people step into the hall, they are bound to pause, gaze up, and feel a deep sense of admiration.
