Imperial War Museum North

Imperial War Museum North is a war memorial museum located in Trafford, Greater Manchester, England. It primarily showcases the history of the British people’s experience of war since 1914. It is the fifth branch of the Imperial War Museums and the first war museum to be built outside the southeast of England.

The museum building itself is one of the representative works of deconstructivist architecture and was awarded the 2003 British Construction Industry Building Award. The museum opened on July 5, 2002. Its designer is the world-renowned architect Daniel Libeskind, and the entire construction cost approximately £28 million. From a distance, the building appears as if composed of three large shards—two lying on the ground and one standing upright. Upon closer inspection or when entering the structure, its complex geometric forms, steeply angled ceilings and floors, and predominantly tilted vertical lines (with only a few straight ones) become apparent. The architect stated that this architectural concept is a metaphor for the trauma of war, representing physical or psychological disabilities caused by conflict.

A highlight exhibition at Imperial War Museum North is “The Big Picture”; every hour, the museum lights dim, and all walls project images and quotes about war, accompanied by the sound of significant events echoing through the hall. This special exhibition is designed to give visitors a profound sense of “what it feels like to lose courage in war.” The museum is free to enter, fully accessible, and open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
