Manchester Chinatown

Manchester Chinatown, also known as "Manchester China Town," is located in the southern part of Manchester city center. Established in 1786, it is bordered by Charlotte Street, Portland Street, Oxford Street, and Mosley Street. It is the second-largest Chinatown in the UK, after London’s, and the third-largest in Europe.

Most of the buildings in Manchester Chinatown are old cotton warehouses dating back to the 19th century. During the 1860s, the American Civil War caused a cotton famine, leaving many of these warehouses vacant. In the 1970s, Chinese immigrants began opening Chinese restaurants in these unused buildings. As the Chinese community grew, various commercial businesses emerged, and the area gradually developed into a recognizable Chinatown. By the 1980s, the district had flourished, offering a wide range of establishments such as restaurants, supermarkets, barbershops, and traditional Chinese medicine clinics, all thriving with business. Visitors often feel as though they have stepped into China, surrounded by an abundance of Chinese goods and numerous restaurants that create the illusion of being back home. This vibrant Chinatown is especially convenient for international students, as its supermarkets stock Chinese condiments and food, allowing them to enjoy authentic Chinese flavors at any time.

The annual Chinese New Year lion dance performances held in Manchester Chinatown are a major highlight of the city's calendar, attracting large crowds of both locals and tourists from around the world.
