The Manchester Science and Industry Museum was established in 1983 and is located within the world’s oldest surviving passenger railway station building. It is the largest museum in Manchester dedicated to showcasing the city’s history of science, technology, and industrial development.

The museum’s exhibits illustrate the roots of the Industrial Revolution in Britain, especially in Manchester, and are divided into various themed sections such as Transport (including locomotives, motor vehicles, and space vehicles), Energy (covering water power, electricity, steam engines, and gas engines), Manchester’s drainage and sanitation systems, textiles, communications, and computing. Visitors can view well-preserved vintage textile machinery, historic railway stations, ancient waterwheels used in paper mills, and steam locomotives from different eras that showcase technological improvements over time. One of the more unique exhibits is “Underground Manchester,” housed in the station’s cellar, which explores the development of Manchester’s water supply and public health infrastructure from Roman times to the present day.

Through the museum’s collection of steam engines, locomotives, and industrial machinery, visitors can gain a profound understanding of the development of both British and global industry, as well as the conveniences that modern industrial civilization has brought to everyday life.
