Manchester Jewish Museum is housed in what was once a Portuguese and Spanish synagogue in Manchester. Established in 1984, it is the only Jewish museum in the UK outside of London. The synagogue where the museum is located is the oldest surviving Jewish place of worship in Manchester, featuring typical Victorian architectural style, influenced by Moorish design—especially notable for its vibrant stained-glass windows and distinctive wrought-iron decorations.

The museum primarily tells the story of Manchester’s Jewish community over more than 200 years and houses a collection of historical artifacts related to them, including archives, photographs, and oral history materials. Visitors can hear numerous stories about the lives and experiences of Jews in Manchester. The photo collection includes around 25,000 images that depict Jewish life in work, school, leisure, religious practices, weddings, politics, trade, and charitable activities. The oral history collection mainly consists of interviews conducted with Manchester Jews during the 1970s and 1980s, covering themes such as immigration, family and school life, work, politics, anti-Semitism, war, and religion.

The museum’s collection of Jewish-related objects is rich and diverse, aiming to provide insight into the past and present lives of Jewish people through material culture. The exhibits span religious, cultural, and textile collections, including kippahs, curtains, clothing, tallitot (Jewish prayer shawls), uniforms, and wedding dresses.
