Most of Bolton Museum’s collection comes from private donations and is divided into six major sections: Art, Botany, Entomology, Egyptology, Geology, and Local History. The art collection includes over 300 oil paintings from the 19th to 20th centuries, more than 800 watercolours and prints from the 18th to 20th centuries, over 800 illustrations printed by 20th-century artists, and more than 100 pieces of contemporary pottery. Bolton Museum has a collection of ancient Egyptian artefacts due to its historical cotton trade with Egypt, including Egyptian coffins, mummies, and textiles.
