The majestic Pyrenees – Mont Perdu is the largest mountain range in southwestern Europe, straddling the current border between France and Spain. It centers around the limestone peak of Mont Perdu, which rises to an elevation of 3,352 meters, covering an area of 30,639 hectares. On the Spanish side are two of Europe’s largest and deepest canyons, while the steeper northern slopes on the French side feature three vast cirque barriers, fully representing the region’s geology and landforms.

In addition to its magnificent mountains, the area boasts serene pastoral landscapes that reflect a way of agricultural life once common across Europe’s highlands but now found almost exclusively in the Pyrenees. Here, visitors can explore the enduring legacy of old European society through unique scenes of villages, farms, fields, highland pastures, and rugged mountain paths. The mountain scenery is spectacular, making it a significant tourist destination as well as a prime spot for mountaineering and skiing.

The site attracts a steady stream of visitors, among whom the Spanish village of Torla and the French village of Gavarnie are two of the most captivating highlights. The ancient Roman amphitheater in Gavarnie appears particularly elegant, complemented by rock faces beloved by mountaineers and spectacular waterfalls.
